Louisville is an exciting community in Boulder County, a mish-mash of old charms and new tricks. According to history books, Louisville was first settled in the 1870s upon the establishment of the Welch Mine. This mine was part of the productive Northern Coalfield, which covers both Weld and Boulder counties. Louisville was later incorporated in 1882 and was named after Louis Nawatny. In fact, this local landowner named the town after himself. Most of Louisville’s history and local legends are evident in its collection of historic buildings, most of which are concentrated in the community’s Old Town district.

Louisville is located approximately 10 miles away from Boulder. Denver is roughly 22 miles away. The cities closest to Louisville include Longmont, Lafayette, Allenspark, Jamestown, Niwot, and Eldorado Springs. Louisville’s population numbers at about 18,370 residents according to the latest estimates. The town is served by Boulder Valley School District.

  • Louisville Historical Museum – The perfect place to learn more about Louisville’s past, the Historical Museum is housed in the Jacoe Store. Various artifacts and historic photographs are featured in the museum, along with coal mining paraphernalia.
  • Historic Downtown Louisville – Downtown Louisville is the town’s heart and features a large collection of historic buildings over a hundred years old. Most of these well-preserved structures now house some of Louisville’s art galleries, shops, restaurants, pubs, and cafes. The Historical Museum, the Public Library, and the City Hall are all located here.
