In 2017, Boulder, Colorado was voted the happiest city in the country by National Geographic. It is easy how the city won that award. Surrounded by stunning views of the mountains, gorgeous open spaces to enjoy, and 245 days of sunshine a year, how could someone not be happy? Happiness can also be attributed to these five great things you can do in BoCo:
1. Hike in the Flatirons
Above all, Boulder is known for its active outdoor community. When in the city, you should take time to get outdoors and visit Chautauqua Park. This gorgeous hiking area is where the Flatirons are based. Within thirty minutes, you can be next to one of the Flatirons! If you want a bit longer of a hike, visit Royal Arch. This site is a gorgeous rock arch nestled on the mountainside. Now, for the more risk-taking population, you can climb the facade of the flatirons. This is, however, extremely dangerous and people die each year trying this climb. Therefore the climb should be done by professionals only. Not a hiker? The park across from the trails offers a great picnic space, a spot to throw the frisbee around, and enjoy wonderful views.
2. Visit the Dushanbe Tea House
One of Boulder’s hidden gems is the Dushanbe Tea House. This restaurant and coffee house was handmade in Dushanbe, the capital city of Tajikistan. From there it was disassembled, and sent to the city of Boulder as a gift. In exchange, Boulder sent an internet cafe to the city of Dushanbe. The pieces sat in a warehouse until Boulder’s city government found the land and permit. Now, the cafe is open seven days a week. They serve breakfast, lunch and dinner as well as drinks, tea and coffee seven days of week. The ceiling is handpainted with gorgeous patterns, while the wood pillars are hand-carved with intricate designs. Make reservations or arrive early because the cafe can get crowded.
3. Stroll Historic Pearl Street
In search for some culture? Pearl Street Mall in downtown Boulder offers a blend of the best that the town has to offer. Lined with a blend of local businesses and national chains, the mall offers a great place to spend time and run some errands. During the summer, you can find street artists over the four blocks. Don’t forget to visit the Country Courthouse!
4. Check out the University of Colorado
The University of Colorado Boulder is the state’s flagship campus. Spanning 600 acres, the campus is full of beautiful brick buildings, grass fields, and is surrounded by stunning views of the flatirons. While on campus, go check out a Buffs football game as they battle other teams in the Pac-12, or go see a performance from one of the biggest art departments in the country.
5. Run the Bolder Boulder
Known as America’s greatest 10K, the Bolder Boulder is a 40,000 person fitness party through the beautiful neighborhoods of Boulder. The best part? You finish the race on Folsom Field, the football field of the University of Colorado Buffaloes! Along the race route are slip ‘n’ slides, free cocktails, bacon, and more! After you finish, enjoy a party with tons of vendors, and then take a seat at Folsom and enjoy a professional race.
Boulder is a town that can make any sort of person happy. From the risky outdoors people to the mall shoppers, it’s got everything one can need. Boulder is a vibrant and growing city, that will not disappoint.
